Bosch Battery Compatibility – Green vs Blue Overview

Bosch sells cordless tools under several battery systems that may share the same voltage while remaining physically and electronically incompatible. The most important distinction is between Bosch Home & Garden tools, commonly called Bosch Green, and Bosch Professional tools, commonly called Bosch Blue.

Bosch currently has four commonly encountered compact and standard-voltage cordless platforms:

  • Bosch 12V POWER FOR ALL – green DIY and Home & Garden tools
  • Bosch Professional 12V System – blue professional tools
  • Bosch 18V POWER FOR ALL – green DIY, Home & Garden and participating alliance tools
  • Bosch Professional 18V System / AMPShare – blue professional and participating AMPShare tools

These four battery systems are not universally interchangeable. A Bosch Green battery does not automatically fit a Bosch Blue tool, and matching voltage labels do not guarantee compatibility.

This guide explains:

  • The difference between Bosch Green and Bosch Blue batteries
  • Bosch DIY 12V and Professional 12V compatibility
  • Bosch DIY 18V and Professional 18V compatibility
  • Older Bosch 10.8V battery compatibility
  • POWER FOR ALL and AMPShare compatibility
  • When a Bosch battery adapter may be required

Bosch Cordless Battery Systems Compared

Bosch Platform Common Name Typical Battery Name Compatible Within
Bosch 12V POWER FOR ALL 12V Green / DIY PBA 12V Bosch 12V POWER FOR ALL tools
Bosch Professional 12V System 12V Blue / Professional GBA 12V Bosch Professional 10.8V and 12V tools since 2005
Bosch 18V POWER FOR ALL 18V Green / DIY PBA 18V Bosch Green 18V tools and participating POWER FOR ALL ALLIANCE products
Bosch Professional 18V System 18V Blue / Professional GBA 18V, ProCORE18V and EXPERT 18V Bosch Professional 18V tools since 2008 and participating AMPShare tools

Are Bosch Green and Bosch Blue Batteries Interchangeable?

No. Bosch Green and Bosch Blue batteries are separate platforms.

This applies even when both batteries display the same voltage:

  • Bosch Green 12V batteries do not directly fit Bosch Blue Professional 12V tools
  • Bosch Blue Professional 12V batteries do not directly fit Bosch Green 12V tools
  • Bosch Green 18V batteries do not directly fit Bosch Blue Professional 18V tools
  • Bosch Blue Professional 18V batteries do not directly fit Bosch Green 18V tools

The battery rails, housing shape, terminals and electronic requirements differ between the Home & Garden and Professional systems. An identical voltage rating only describes the battery’s voltage class; it does not make the physical or electronic interfaces compatible.

A purpose-built battery adapter may allow certain Bosch Green and Bosch Blue combinations, but the adapter must be designed for the exact battery → tool direction.

Bosch 12V DIY Battery Compatibility – Green POWER FOR ALL

The green Bosch DIY and Home & Garden 12V platform is officially called the 12V POWER FOR ALL system. Its removable batteries normally carry the PBA 12V designation.

Key facts:

  • PBA 12V batteries are designed for tools identified as 12V POWER FOR ALL
  • Different amp-hour capacities within the same 12V POWER FOR ALL platform provide different runtimes
  • A higher Ah rating does not change the battery’s nominal voltage
  • PBA 12V batteries are not compatible with Bosch Professional GBA 12V tools
  • PBA 12V batteries are not compatible with Bosch Green or Bosch Professional 18V tools

Some earlier green Bosch DIY tools were labelled 10.8V before later products adopted the 12V designation. Bosch currently identifies certain older 10.8V tools as members of the 12V POWER FOR ALL system.

However, owners of an older Bosch Green 10.8V tool should verify the exact tool and battery model rather than relying only on the voltage label. The safest confirmation is that Bosch lists the tool’s battery compatibility as 12V POWER FOR ALL.

Bosch Professional 12V Battery Compatibility – Blue Professional

The blue Bosch Professional compact battery platform is officially called the Professional 12V System. Its batteries normally use the GBA 12V designation.

Bosch previously labelled this professional platform as 10.8V. Beginning in 2017, Bosch changed the displayed voltage designation from 10.8V to 12V in most markets. This was primarily a naming change, not the introduction of an incompatible battery platform.

Key facts:

  • Bosch Professional 10.8V and 12V batteries belong to the same professional voltage-class system
  • Bosch states that its Professional 10.8V and 12V batteries, chargers and tools have been compatible since 2005
  • Older Bosch Professional 10.8V batteries can be used with compatible Professional 12V tools
  • Current Bosch Professional 12V batteries can be used with compatible Professional 10.8V tools
  • Different capacities affect runtime and battery size, not system voltage
  • Bosch Professional GBA 12V batteries do not directly fit Bosch Green PBA 12V tools

This 10.8V-to-12V compatibility applies specifically to the Bosch Professional Blue system. It should not be interpreted as compatibility with green Bosch DIY 10.8V or 12V tools.

Bosch 18V DIY Battery Compatibility – Green POWER FOR ALL

The green Bosch DIY and Home & Garden 18V platform is called 18V POWER FOR ALL. Its removable batteries normally use the PBA 18V designation.

Key facts:

  • PBA 18V batteries are compatible with Bosch Home & Garden tools identified as 18V POWER FOR ALL
  • Bosch states that the current green 18V system is forward- and backward-compatible with green Bosch 18V tools dating back to 2007
  • Different PBA 18V capacities share the same basic connection within the platform
  • Higher-capacity batteries normally increase runtime and may support more demanding applications
  • PBA 18V batteries may also work with participating brands in the POWER FOR ALL ALLIANCE
  • PBA 18V batteries do not directly fit Bosch Professional 18V tools

The POWER FOR ALL ALLIANCE is the consumer-oriented multi-brand system. It is separate from the professional AMPShare system, even though both are based around Bosch battery technology.

Bosch Professional 18V Battery Compatibility – Blue Professional

The blue Bosch Professional 18V platform is officially called the Professional 18V System. It is also the battery foundation used by the professional multi-brand AMPShare alliance.

Common battery families within the Bosch Professional 18V System include:

  • GBA 18V standard professional batteries
  • ProCORE18V high-performance batteries
  • EXPERT 18V / EXBA18V batteries
  • Compatible batteries carrying the AMPShare designation

Key facts:

  • Bosch states that Professional 18V batteries and tools within the current system have been compatible since 2008
  • GBA 18V batteries work with compatible Bosch Professional 18V tools
  • ProCORE18V batteries work with compatible Bosch Professional 18V tools, including older tools within the system
  • EXPERT 18V batteries remain part of the same Professional 18V ecosystem
  • Compatible AMPShare batteries can be used with Bosch Professional 18V tools
  • Bosch Professional 18V batteries can be used with participating AMPShare tools
  • Bosch Professional 18V batteries do not directly fit green Bosch 18V POWER FOR ALL tools

Although standard GBA, ProCORE18V and EXPERT batteries can operate compatible tools within the system, some high-demand tools may deliver their best performance only when paired with a recommended high-output battery.

Important: Compatibility since 2008 refers to the current Bosch Professional 18V lithium-ion system. Do not assume that every much older Bosch 18V battery, particularly batteries with a different legacy housing or connector, belongs to the current system. Check the exact tool and battery model when dealing with older equipment.

POWER FOR ALL vs AMPShare

Bosch participates in two separate multi-brand battery ecosystems:

System Market Bosch Battery Platform Cross-Compatible With the Other System?
POWER FOR ALL ALLIANCE DIY, home and garden Bosch Green PBA 18V ❌ No
AMPShare Professional, trade and industry Bosch Professional 18V ❌ No

A POWER FOR ALL battery does not directly fit an AMPShare tool, and an AMPShare battery does not directly fit a POWER FOR ALL tool. The two alliances use different physical and electronic battery interfaces.

Quick Bosch Battery Identification Guide

When identifying a Bosch battery, do not rely only on the Bosch logo or voltage printed on the housing. Look for the platform designation and battery prefix.

  • PBA 12V: Bosch Green 12V POWER FOR ALL
  • GBA 12V: Bosch Blue Professional 12V
  • PBA 18V: Bosch Green 18V POWER FOR ALL
  • GBA 18V: Bosch Blue Professional 18V
  • ProCORE18V: Bosch Blue Professional high-performance 18V
  • EXBA18V / EXPERT: Bosch Professional 18V
  • AMPShare: Professional 18V alliance based on the Bosch Professional interface

The tool’s colour can be a useful first clue, but the battery model and official platform name provide a more reliable identification.

Using Battery Adapters With Bosch Tools

By default, Bosch batteries are only compatible with tools designed for their specific battery platform. A third-party battery adapter can allow certain batteries and tools from different platforms to be used together when the adapter is designed for that exact combination.

Examples may include:

  • Using a Bosch Green PBA 18V battery on a compatible Bosch Blue Professional 18V tool
  • Using a Bosch Blue Professional 18V battery on a compatible Bosch Green 18V tool
  • Using another supported battery brand on a Bosch Professional 12V or 18V tool
  • Using a Bosch battery on a compatible tool from another brand

Battery adapters are directional. An adapter labelled “Bosch Green battery to Bosch Blue tool” is not automatically capable of operating in the opposite direction.

Depending on the battery and tool combination, an adapter may include:

  • A platform-specific mechanical interface
  • Correctly arranged electrical terminals
  • Battery-management or low-voltage protection
  • Voltage regulation or conversion when required by the design

Do not charge a battery through a standard tool adapter. Batteries should be removed from the adapter and charged with the correct charger designed for their original battery platform.

Important Disclaimer – Third-Party Battery Adapters

Battery adapters are third-party accessories. They are not manufactured by, licensed by or endorsed by Robert Bosch Power Tools GmbH.

Using a third-party adapter may fall outside the battery or tool manufacturer’s specifications and may affect warranty coverage. Always confirm that the adapter is explicitly designed for the exact battery platform, tool platform and direction of use.

Do not force a battery onto a tool, modify battery terminals or connect batteries directly using exposed wiring.

Bosch Battery Adapter Options

Because Bosch uses separate Green, Blue and 12V battery platforms, choose the collection that matches the battery or tool system you own.
